 Newsletter Term 2 Edition 2

Deputy Principal's News

Term 2 has continued to bring a range of exciting cross-curricular experiences to Pasadena, with students exploring the underwater world through Virtual Reality, boxing, tennis and table tennis coaching all underway, and our Roadshow performers rehearsing regularly before we head off to visit our local primary schools later this term.

Last Friday, was an exciting day of learning for our staff as Te Kāhui Ako o Waitematā, our Community of Learning, organised a day of Professional Development for our teachers, teacher aides, and support staff.  Over 450 educators from our local schools attended, collaborating together to share their experiences and new learning, as well as hearing from experts across a range of fields - such as Collaborative Teaching, Whakakōrero Tamariki, Supporting Student Wellbeing, and Culturally Responsive Practice.  It was great to see two of our teachers, Christine Abercrombie and Donovan Farnham, sharing their expertise by facilitating workshops at this event.

This week we would also like to celebrate and thank our incredible team during Support Staff Week.  Our amazing teacher aides, caretaker, and office staff all do a wonderful job of supporting the Pasadena Community, whether it’s helping students engage with their learning, communicating with families, or keeping our school looking great.  We really appreciate them and all that they do.

Wellbeing Tips from our Counsellor: Anxiety

If your child is feeling anxious, upset, worried or stressed here are a few ideas you could try to help them relax:

Pretend that your tummy is a big balloon, breathe in and make the balloon bigger and then breathe out and make the balloon shrink.

Together you could make a coping skills toolbox kit (worry box or self-soothe box) so that when they need to, they can pick out things that help them to feel calm, it can be anything, a photo of their favourite place or pet, some play dough, clay, a stress ball or fidget toy that they can squeeze, a favourite stuffed animal, bubble wrap, some cue cards "when I feel worried I can....'

Using supportive and patient language such as "Together we can do this, we are a team” or “you are okay, you’re safe, I’m here for you.'”

If they find drop off difficult at school, make it a quick goodbye, a reassuring hug and have a plan so that they have a friend or place they can go to before school starts. If we can help children gradually face their fears, then they will learn each time that it is not so scary and each time it will feel less stressful instead of avoiding the people, places or things that make them feel anxious.

You might want to give them a transitional object that makes them feel reassured and that they can think of you that they can keep in their pocket.

Practice a mindfulness exercise when your child isn't feeling anxious so that when they need to they can put it into practice such as thinking about something they can touch, something they can taste, something they can smell and something they can see - this helps them to come back to the present and slow down the panic.  It is about letting the thoughts and feelings come and go, acknowledging they are there but they are just thoughts!

If your child would like to see our counsellor Rebecca, she can be contacted at wellbeing@pasadena.school.nz she is here on a Thursday.

Auckland Heat of the Kids Lit Quiz

On Friday 21st May, two Pasadena teams participated in the Annual Literature quiz competition at St Cuthert's School for Girls.
There were over 53 teams from all over Auckland vying to win this extremely tough competition for a spot in the New Zealand final, held in Wellington.
After the brutal yet fun 100 questions (10 rounds of 10 questions) the top 3 placings were announced.
In 3rd place we had Pasadena Team 2!!
In 2nd place we had the Pasadena Team 1!!
This, out of 53 other teams!!! Overall, this is one of our greatest results and we can be proud of this monumental achievement. Here are the wonderful student as coached by the ever gritty yet compassionate taskmaster, Mr Brown: Tilly Rm6, Connie Rm11, Ruby Rm12, Manaaki Rm9, Zara  Rm6, Chris Rm 5, Vicki Rm 15, Charlotte Rm 7, Mahinaarangi Rm 10, Austin Rm 13.

Blake NZ Virtual Reality

This week, we are very fortunate to have Blake Virtual-Reality come to school. In partnership with New Zealand Geographic, NZ-VR is a school outreach programme that aims to connect thousands of young New Zealanders with the marine environment. Through virtual reality (VR) technology, NZ-VR allows students to experience the rich biodiversity that exists below the surface of the ocean, as well as the damage that has been done to the ecosystem.

Wearing a VR headset, our students experienced a number of underwater biomes through 360˚ videos that compared and contrasted pristine marine environments and damaged ones. They learnt about what causes them and what actions can be taken to protect the marine environment.

Students come away from the session with practical actions they can take to help protect the environment and a much deeper sense and understanding of kaitiakitanga.

CZ Year 7 Girls Football
A couple of days ago on Tuesday 25 May, the Pasadena Year 7 girls competed in the Central Zone Football Tournament down at Western Springs Football fields.

It was a very tough day, we played 6x 20-minute games, which was exhausting but Pasa managed to push forward and come 5th overall. In our last game we put in our best effort and won 4-0 against Royal Oak.  We had a great day, showing lots of enthusiasm and teamwork.  Thank you Miss Pretorius for coaching us.

On Friday, the 21st of May, students from Pasadena Intermediate participated in Te Puni Reo Poitarawhiti - Māori Language Netball Tournament. This competition was completely run in te reo Māori. 35 of our students participated and battled it out against a number of schools in Auckland. Although we came first in the tournament, the most important part of the day was hearing the Māori language outside of school!

Thank you so much to Matua Wharehuia Dixon, Whaea Pauline Pile, and Whaea Amokura Davis who lead our teams to victory.

Central Zone Y7 Boys Football
On Tuesday 1st June, Pasadena took a Y7 boys team to participate in the annual Central Zone Football tournament at Seddon Fields.

The boys played with determination and enthusiasm and represented Pasadena admirably.

The boys were sensational and made it to the grand final, with close, edge of your seat wins over Waikowhai, Balmoral, Kōwhai, Ponsonby and Mt Roskill (Semifinal). In the final against Remuera Intermediate we drew 2 all at the end of the game and went into penalty shootout. Unfortunately we lost that 1-0 but we can hold our heads high with arguably our greatest result in a long time for a boys Football team.

I would like to thank the amazing Mike Gillham who helped coach and guide the boys on the day.

The names of the team: Tesho Rm 2, Cole Rm 3, Archie Rm 5, Jake Rm 3, Oscar Rm 6, Mahe Rm 6, Paul Rm 12, Max Rm 12, Jakob Rm 14, Noah Rm 3, Hariem Rm 12, Austin Rm 13, Alex Rm 12, Emmett Rm 12, Logan Rm 5

Central Zone Y8 Girls Football
Recently, a group of students represented Pasadena Intermediate at the Year 8 Girls Central Zone Football tournament. We had a team of high spirited girls, some of whom hadn't played football properly before, and it was great to see the girls work together at practices in the lead up to the big day.

We had our work cut out for us. We battled through the pool games and met some fierce competition. The girls played hard and although we struggled, played with pride and always showed sportsmanship. The team was constantly laughing and we had a fantastic day.

During our last game, the fatigue started to show and the girls were visibly tired. In the halftime break, they gave themselves a pep talk and powered through for the last half, scoring twice to beat Waiheke Intermediate 2-0. It was a great way to finish the day.

A big thank you to the parents who came down to support the girls, as well as the parents who helped by sending along pairs of boots for us to use.
