Principal's News

It's great to have most students back to school after our second COVID-19 lockdown. Teachers have ensured that students feel comfortable returning to school through a back to school transition programme. Overall the return to school has been very smooth with 93% of students attending.

Please remind your child/ children that we have level 2 protocols in place. These include:

  • Students need to stay home if they are sick or show any cold or flu symptoms. Anybody showing signs of these at school will be sent home
  • Staff and pupils should be far enough away from each other so that they are not breathing or touching each other
  • Children will need to wash their hands and use sanitizer (available in classrooms) before and after break times
  • Students need to bring a named drink bottle to school as the drink fountains will only be available for students to fill empty bottles
  • We strongly recommend that students bring their own devices to use

A big thank you to our community who have done a fantastic job following our protocols, which in turn has made returning to school a lot easier and smooth.

School Trustees Elections

Pasadena will be holding its mid-term election for the Board of Trustees on 4 December. We will be seeking nominations for 2 parent trustees to replace Shelly Pathak and Jill Pitches as outgoing trustees.  Pasadena runs a staggered (mid-term) election cycle, with elections held every 18 months, for a 3-year term.  This ensures that there is continuity on the board, with a proportion of board members retained so that newly elected members can benefit from their knowledge.

What does the board do?  We focus on matters of governance, as opposed to the day to day running of the school.  Working alongside Jonathan Hughes and other teacher representatives, we are accountable for student achievement, setting educational goals and the strategic direction of the school, and ensuring that the school complies with legal and policy requirements.  We meet about 10 times during the school year for approximately 2 hours, with some additional meetings for those sitting on sub-committees.  We work these meeting times around work and child commitments.  You can find some more information here about what a school board trustee does.

What skills and experience do I need?  You don’t need any particular type of experience, although it’s great if you do.  What’s more important is for our board to reflect our diverse school community and for people to be passionate about student achievement, which is more than just academic excellence!  All school boards have access to the NZ School Trustees Association which offers free support, training, mentoring and wealth of information to trustees.

How do I put myself up for nomination? Nomination papers will be sent out on 11 October. Your nomination needs to be returned by 1 November.  If more than three nominations for candidates are received, then voting papers will be issued on 6 November, with voting closing on 4 December 2020.

Next steps.  If this is something you would be interested in, then come along to our next board meeting on Tuesday 22 September at 6:30 – 8:30pm in the Administration Room next to the office and see what we do.  All of the current board have work or educational commitments that we juggle but it’s not an overly onerous commitment!  It’s a really rewarding and worthwhile experience, to actually make a difference in the educational outcomes for our children.  If you want to have a chat then feel free to give either Shelly or Jill a call – Shelly 021 174 4634, Jill 021 514 335.

2021 Enrolments

This year we have streamlined the enrolment process by constructing an online form. To access the form, please go to https://enrol.etap.co.nz/ and use the school code 1437.
Please note that all out of zone enrolments need to be submitted by 11 September 2020.

Students Keeping Safe Online

Recently an inappropriate Tik Tok video has been widely shared throughout the country and the world. This is an excellent reminder to check that you have protocols in place as a family to ensure that students are safe online and monitored. The MOE and Netsafe have a number of great resources that are available to parents and students. These include:

Punctuality

Coming to school and arriving at school on time are the first steps in succeeding.

Successful students have high attendance, many at or close to 100%, and they are always on time.

Good punctuality at school is essential for students to achieve their full educational potential.  It is also vital for students to form good habits for later life.  Being in class on time is a courtesy, it is a way of showing respect to teachers and classmates. It also shows organisation and commitment to learning.

We would ask parents to support us in maintaining good punctuality by:

  • Making sure their child gets enough sleep, going to bed at a reasonable time
  • Ensuring that their children get up in plenty of time to be ready and prepared for school
  • Ensuring their child has organised their bag and equipment the night before so that this does not delay departure in the morning
  • Discussing why punctuality is important with their child

As a reminder, school starts at 8.45am on Monday - Thursday, and 9.00am on Friday.
Being punctual means that students are in their classroom before the bell goes at these times.

Camp

Camp will take place Monday 16th November - Wednesday 18th November  (Rooms 1 Heather Ruru, 2 Donovan Farnham, 3 Talia Rissling, 4 William Uele, 10 James Bonnar, 11 Maddie Gordine, 12 Christine Abercrombie) and Wednesday 18th November - Friday 20th November (Rooms 5 Tasi Tasi, 6 Keith Ward, 7 Charlotte Asi-Masters, 8 Jerome Brown, 9 Alicia King, 13 Rangimarie Maxted, 14 Kirsten Hudson).  There will be health and safety protocols in place dependent on what level it is, and are confident we can provide a safe and enjoyable learning experience for our students.
We will be sending out more information about camp in the next few weeks.

School Production

After a few weeks away, the cast and crew of Moana are back at it and working even harder than before! Many of our cast took the time away from school to learn their lines and the lyrics for all of the songs.

Due to lockdown and the nearly three weeks away from school, the decision has been made to postpone our performance until Term 4 Week 4. This will give the cast and crew a few extra weeks to ensure that they are well prepared for what I am positive will be an amazing production.

The students are not only playing a big role in the acting and backstage roles, but they are an integral part of set and costume design. Over the past few weeks we have had some busy little bees creating and crafting parts of our set and parts of costumes.

If your child is involved in the production as an actor, can you please encourage them to listen carefully to the notices to ensure that they are attending practices when needed. They can also be practicing lines, choreography and singing at home. All of the backing tracks and script are posted in our Google Classroom. If your child is part of the Shiny ensemble, ocean ensemble, or Maui ensemble could you please encourage them to bring in their plain white t-shirt so that we can get them creating their own costumes as soon as possible.

We are so looking forward to seeing everything come together after all of the student’s hard work and dedication.

Talia Rissling and William Uele

School Sports

Central Zone and AAIMS have considered all the information provided by the MoE, MoH and NZ sport and the decision has been made that all Term 3 AAIMS Zone and Interzone sports are cancelled until details are released from the next announcement.

During this time at school, the normal classroom PE programs are running and trials are taking place for term 4 Central Zone sports. This week we have had Central Zone trials for the Boys and Girls basketball take place. Next week the touch rugby trials will start for the Boys and Mixed Central Zone teams.
