Deputy Principal's News

Last Friday, was an exciting day of learning for our staff as Te Kāhui Ako o Waitematā, our Community of Learning, participated in a day of Professional Development for teachers, teacher aides, and support staff.  Educators from our local schools attended, with a focus on our local curriculum and what makes our area unique. It was a privilege to hear from the Polynesian Panthers, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, and Judith Locke about empowering our tamariki, as well as hearing from experts across a range of fields - such as Collaborative Teaching, Supporting Neurodiverse Learners, a Local Curriculum Hīkoi and Local Stories, Supporting Student Wellbeing, and Building Cultural Capability.

This week we would also like to celebrate and thank our incredible team during Support Staff Week.  Our amazing teacher aides, caretaker, counsellor and office staff all do a wonderful job of supporting the Pasadena Community, whether it’s helping students engage with their learning, communicating with families, or keeping our school looking great.  We really appreciate them and all that they do.

As winter approaches, it is very important that we continue to follow our school’s COVID protocols including the wearing of masks while inside.  We continue to strongly recommend that all students (and staff) wear masks while they are in a classroom setting. We would like all students to wear masks when inside. Masks help to protect not only the individual wearing one but also those around them. If your child forgets their mask or it breaks, we have them available in the school office at all times.

Practice Lockdown Exercise

As part of a review of Health and Safety, today we practised our emergency procedures under the guidance of Harrison Tew® , who specialise in emergency management planning for schools and educational facilities.

The procedures we follow allow us to respond safely and quickly to a range of situations. We are pleased to inform you that our practice today went very well, with our students responding safely and calmly.

During the year we will continue to practise our emergency procedure exercises to ensure all staff and students remain familiar with them.

Should you become aware of a lockdown or an evacuation at the school, can I please ask that you do not attend the school or phone, as we will not be able to respond. Your presence or contact may make it more difficult for us or the emergency services to manage a situation.

Any information pertaining to an emergency occurring at the school will be updated on our website as regularly as possible. We believe that it is important that we conduct regular practices for lockdowns and evacuations so that we can all be well prepared and familiar with our procedures should an emergency occur.

We thank you for your support.

Roadblocks to Communication

A message from Melanie Medland, host of our Roadblocks to Communication parent workshop:

Kia ora,

I know you're the kind of parent who wants to do the best for your rangatahi. You're a parent who's proactive.

So, just checking, you know there is a virtual Roadblocks to Communication workshop on Wednesday 15 June at 6pm in the School Hall.

This workshop is all about the speech patterns - the ones that get in the way of deep, robust communication - are so commonly used it's astounding.

They pop out of us almost on autopilot, like suddenly our mum has arrived in our body and is talking out of our mouths! They can be uncannily scary.

And every now and then, they're ok. Necessary even.

But all the time? As a default setting? All they do is cause damage.

When I teach them, without exception, every parent can hear themselves.

This workshop gets to the heart of change.

It's about growing your awareness.

If you'd like to be part of a change for the better in your family, this is your place to start.

Register your interest here, and I'll see you there.

Here's to growing great rangatahi into awesome adults.

Ngā mihi,

Melanie

CZ Year 7 Girls Football
In the morning of the tournament, Wednesday the 25th of May, we gathered outside the office and left school to go to the Year 7 Central Zone football tournament around 8:30am. We had four tough games all of which we lost and one good game that we tied. We showed great teamwork, determination and sportsmanship.

Overall we had a very good time and couldn't have done it without all the parent help, we give a huge thank you to all the parents who came along to help us as well as Miss Pretorius who organised training the team and took us through the event.

Big congratulations to: Anahera, Aroha, Elsie, Gabriella, Lucy, May, Ruby, Sarai, Stella, Violeta

Poroporoaki and thank you,
Sarai, Ruby and Elsie

CZ Year 8 Girls Football
A couple of weeks ago a team of Year 8 Girls competed in our annual Central Zone Football competition. We played three games against, Ponsonby, St Marys and Dio. The girls fought hard, and looked like one of the better teams during the day, but unfortunately, the scores didn't go our way. Regardless, I was super impressed with the team, especially considering some of the girls had never played before!

Although the day was short, we have organised some friendly matches against Mt Roskill which will be happening next week.

Thanks to the parents who helped with transport, and supported us from the sideline. Also, thank you to Jonathan Hughes for coming down to cheer on the girls. They definitely appreciated having their principal on the sideline.
