Principals News

As the term draws to a close, it has been great to reflect on the multitude of activities that the students have participated in this term.

As an Intermediate School it is imperative that we provided a holistic approach to education where students are able to experience activities across all areas of the curriculum, some they will do for the rest of their lives and some they will only experience once.

With this in mind, it has great to have taken our Pasadena Roadshow out to our local Primary Schools to showcase some of these activities. We are very lucky to have such talented students who are amazing.

With the holidays starting next week please make sure you spend time resting and recharging your batteries ready for the term ahead. Hopefully, the weather will enable families also to get outside and be active.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

ICAS Tests

The 2021 ICAS tests will take place next term. A notice will be sent and emailed home to parents today. These tests are undertaken by the University of New South Wales and are completed online. To enter, please return the slip attached to the notice.

All entries must be in by Thursday, 29 July (first week back at school).

The test dates are as follows:

  • Writing -  Monday 9 August cost $24.73
  • English - Monday 16 August cost $18.40
  •  Science - Monday 23 August cost $18.40
  • Mathematics - Monday 30 August cost $18.40

Roadshow

This term students collaborated with Ms Donnelly to put together a roadshow to promote Pasadena to the local primary schools. It shows lots of cool performances. Drama extension created a play about Snow White. Our Pasifika dance group worked hard to perform a Samoan sasa which was very polished and tidy. There were also students from the Rumaki with a waiata.  The rock band got the crowd moving and had heaps of energy. Not only these performances but many others were showcased, including hip hop, contemporary dance and instrumental. We practiced hard and have had three great performances already. With two more shows to come, I'm sure we can put on more great presentations.

Trees for Survival

On Friday a group of 35 students and 8 parents travelled to Stillwater to plant 500 native trees. We have grown these plants from seedlings in our Trees for Survival unit at Pasadena. They are all natives and part of a project to restore New Zealand waterways. We were rewarded with a spectacular lunch from the landowner.

A big thank you to all our fabulous eco kids and parents.

St Johns

Over the course of Week 8 all the students at Pasadena Intermediate had the chance to take part in an Emergency Response course through St. Johns. Each session was 90 minutes long as we covered what to do in the event of an emergency.

The program aims to empower children to respond to emergencies and prevent injuries. Obviously we hope that our students won’t be involved in an emergency situation, however there may be a time in their lives when they need to respond to an emergency and this may happen when they are by themselves. Students learned basic skills in order to help others, including how to spot danger, how a person may become unconscious, what to do if they find an unconscious person, checking if an individual is breathing, how to use an AED and finally, doing CPR.

Each group was able to practice finding an unconscious person and checking if they are breathing. At the end of each session students got to use the CPR dummies to practice doing chest compressions and breathing.

It was a great experience for students. They got a new learning opportunity and the chance to have some fun!

Unitec’s Intermediate Big Day Out

This week on Tuesday 6th (and Thursday 8th) July we walked up to Unitec to explore Career Pathways at the Intermediate Big Day Out. Our students completed a rotation of activities checking out Animal Science, Building, Plumbing & Drain laying, Light Automotive Engineering, an Autotronics Lab, Electrical Engineering and Te Puna. It was a very engaging and interesting day!

I really enjoyed playing with the brain box for engineering and electrical work. I also enjoyed making things during Building and seeing the animals. I guess I enjoyed it all really. Connie Rm 11

I really enjoyed meeting all the animals. There were many, including bunnies, geckos, bearded dragons and even more. There was a turtle named Myrtle, who swam around in her tank, and there was the tortoise who we got to pat. Isabella Rm 11

My favourite thing was doing the engineering and using the brain boxes, another thing that was cool was seeing all the little animals being taken care of. My favourite animal was the lizards, I liked all of them though.

Rainbow Day

On Friday 18th, Pasadena had their first rainbow wear your own clothes day. This was a day where we could celebrate the diversity in our school and wider community. Thank you to the Student Council for organising this event, everyone enjoyed this day!

Sports News

Central Zone Table Tennis
Recently a group of Pasadena students travelled to the Auckland Table Tennis Stadium to compete against a number of schools in the Central Zone Table Tennis competition.

With over 120 students there was plenty of strong players to face. Our team had their work cut out for them but battled hard through the pool games. One thing that was awesome to see was our students practicing and working with students from other schools, learning from each other and playing friendly games during downtime. Even our students who had not played much before had a fantastic day.

A special thank you to our parent supporters, as well as Reilly Rm9, Carter Rm10 and Ben Rm7 who came along to umpire. Thanks guys!!

Central Zone Boys' Hockey
On Monday 21st of June we took the boys Hockey team to Harbour Hockey stadium to play at the Zone Day, where we competed with determination, courage and lots of skill. There were many highlights of the day, two of them being the draw against Royal Oak and a 3-0 victory over Balmoral. Many thanks to the parents that attended and supported.

Central Zone Girls' Hockey
On Tuesday 22 June, Pasadena sent a Girls hockey squad to the Central Zone hockey tournament at Harbour Hockey stadium. We had a great group of keen girls with a range of experience, some players had never played before, some are Club players and we hadn’t played as a team.

All the girls played with courage and grit as we played tough, experienced schools such as St Cuthberts. We would like to thank all the parents for transport and give a special mention to Kōkā Heather for organising, coaching and managing on the day.

Auckland Intermediate Schools Rugby Champions of Champions

On Tuesday 6th July, our Boys U55kg Rugby Team attended the Auckland Intermediate Schools Rugby Finals - Champions of Champions against 9 other schools held at the Avondale Racecourse. We played 4 games against Farmcove, Sacred Heart, Otahuhu and Pukekohe. We drew with Farmcove 5-5, Lost to Sacred Heart 12 - 5, won against Otahuhu 21-5 and then lost in our final pool game 5-0 after a try being disallowed placing us 2nd overall in our Pool.

It was a long day but one filled with lots of learning for us all where we felt proud to represent Pasadena at the Champions of Champions.  There were a number of stand out players and first time rugby players so we are looking forward to 2022 and the opportunity to play some of these schools again.  We would like to thank Mātua Dan for all the long hours he took out of his time to train us at 7.45 am twice a week and for being our Coach for both the Central Zone and Champions of Champions tournaments. Also a huge thank you to all the parents who transported us to and from Avondale and to the community who donated the many boots to all three of our teams for Central Zone Tournaments. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. Nga mihi maioha ki a koutou.

After School Basketball Term 2
From the start of Term 2, Pasadena participated in the inaugural 3 on 3 competition interschool Basketball competition at Unitec Stadium in Mt Albert. We entered 4 teams and all players had fun learning new skills and making friendships.
I would like to thank Mr Tasi for coming along every week to support the students.
Congratulations to the Pasa Warriors who won the final tournament.

See you all again next term for the 5 on 5 competition!

Sports Updates

Waterpolo
This term Pasadena waterpolo has started. All kids who were keen to try out waterpolo came to the first trial at West Wave. Once the teams were organised we ended up with two amazing teams with outstanding players. Very soon after the first team went to the Central Zone tournament and even though it was tough we finished in fifth place. Now every Friday both teams compete in a league against other intermediate teams out west.
Elsha Rm7

Netball
The Year 8/1 netball team has had an awesome season so far. We made it into the 2nd grade which we were very happy with and have been working hard to try to win our grade to get into the top grade but unfortunately because we drew our last game it put us in second place. We are all very excited to head along to the upcoming AIMs games and compete against so many other schools!
