Principals News

Welcome back to Term 2. The winter months are upon us, so please make sure your children are dressing appropriately for the weather. Often the rain sets in as students leave for the day at 3 pm, so please make sure they have a jacket and/or an umbrella.

It has been great to have the community behind our Fundraising Fiesta, which we have been undertaking in the past month. I have loved hearing the stories of our students going to great lengths to raise money, approaching local businesses, speaking with family and working with our local community. Also, a big thank you to the large number of families who decided to sponsor other students in the school. We are fortunate to have such a caring community. It was such a fantastic effort, we raised $37,000 less the cost of prizes.

The winter sports season has kicked into action. Thank you to our incredible staff, many of who have their own families who give up their time after school hours coaching and managing Netball, Basketball and Waterpolo teams. I would also like to acknowledge the parents who also support these teams as well.

Hero Information Evening

On Wednesday 26th May at 6pm in the Pasadena Centre, we will be holding a Hero Information Evening.

During this time we will cover:

  • How to log on to Hero as a parent/caregiver
  • What is real-time reporting and what will be reported each term
  • How to understand achievement against the end of year standards

The presentation will be emailed out the following day (on Thursday). We hope to see you there.

Toi Tāmaki, Auckland Art Gallery visit
On Tuesday, 4 May, more than 40 students visited Toi Tū, Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art, an exhibition at Toi Tāmaki, Auckland Art Gallery. It was the largest exhibition held in the gallery’s 132-year history and featured more than 300 works by 110 Māori artists. Our reo Māori speaking guides took us on a tour and we saw paintings, clay-making, jewellery, sculpture, photography, rāranga, digital media, film, and light installations.

Back at kura, we created our own small pieces of art with collage, inspired by what we saw. We wrote about our art and how it related to the art in the exhibition.

Thank you to the parents who accompanied and supported us on the day. Me mihi ka tika!

Friendship Factor

On Monday we had a guest speaker come and present to us ‘The Friendship Factor’. He spoke about how to make friends, keep friends, and most importantly, how to be a good friend. We discussed how to overcome common beliefs such as “I’m too shy” and “I’m the only one who struggles,” as well as the biggest mistakes to avoid at school and within friend groups. Issues including backstabbing, mean humour, and bullying were covered, along with practical advice on improving existing friendships and the importance of choosing quality over quantity.

Solve for Tomorrow

On Thursday 6 May, it was very exciting to have our Student Council work with MOTAT and Samsung to launch 'Solve for Tomorrow'.

Solve for Tomorrow is a new nationwide competition designed to raise awareness of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) topics and encourage students to address their community’s societal issues with innovative, STEAM-based solutions. The competition has been hugely influential internationally, having over 1.7 million students and teachers participate across more than 20 countries in the past 10 years, and a national prize of $20,000.

As part of the launch, the Student Council took part in a STEAM challenge to solve a water conservation issue, with Dr Siouxsie Wiles supporting them with advice and feedback.  Students worked through the Design Thinking process, moving from ideation to prototyping their solution.  They were then able to pitch their ideas to Dr Siouxsie Wiles and a MOTAT educator.  There were media partners filming the event and interviewing students, including live crosses with the AM Show.
It was very exciting to take part in a launch event, with students seeing behind the scenes, as well as taking part in a creative STEAM challenge.

Revolution Tour

We had the Revolution Tour perform at Pasadena Intermediate on Monday the 10th of May. The Revolution Tour is a performing arts group that travel all over Auckland, and New Zealand, speaking and visiting schools to encourage and inspire young people to aim high and to be the best person that they can be.

We had heaps of fun! They sang, and they made us laugh, but the highlight was definitely the dance battle between teacher and student. We also enjoyed the guest speaker who encouraged our students to have the courage to ask for help when things get tough. It was an awesome morning!

Bully-Free Week 2021

This week is Bully-Free Week. Students will be learning about how to identify bullying as well as how to stop bullying in our school and community, culminating in Pink Shirt day on Friday.

Pink Shirt Day 2021

This Friday to end Bully-Free Week, we will have Pink Shirt Day. If your child has a pink shirt, jacket or jumper, they are able to wear their own clothes on Friday. If not, they will have to come to school in their school uniform.

Uniform

It’s great to see students organised and wearing their uniform with pride.  A reminder that shoes must be black with black laces.
Now that it is getting cooler, students may wish to wear a Pasadena beanie or jacket to school.  These are available for purchase from the office and payment made through Kindo. Students are also able to wear plain navy or black fitted long sleeve tops or pants underneath their uniforms.

Simple jewellery, such as studs, that are suitable for school are welcome however, large hoop earring or chains are a Health and Safety concern, particularly during specialist and PE so we ask students to wear these on the weekend or after school.  Thank you for your support with this.

It is essential that students continue to bring their PE gear, so they can participate fully in the curriculum.  All uniform items should be labelled clearly in the case it is misplaced, so that it can returned.  Lost property can be located in the School Office.

If for some reason, a student is unable to wear the correct uniform they need to bring a note from their parent or caregiver to our Deputy Principal, Mary Pretorius, who will give them a uniform pass.

School Photos
Today your child was given a personalised photolife card with samples of their individual and class photo. Follow the instructions on the card to place you order online. Please note that you need to place your order by Sunday 13th June to have your child's photo pack delivered free to school.

Sports News

Central Zone Girls Futsal
Last Thursday, we had one Year 7 and one Year 8 team competing in the Central Zone Futsal Tournament. This was the first time many of us had played futsal before. We had a lot of fun and learned to work well together in our teams. The Year 7 team came 6th in the competition and the Year 8 team came 5th.

We would like to thank the parents who transported as well as coming to support and help us throughout the day.

Central Zone Water Polo

On Monday 17th May, Pasadena Intermediate sent a water polo team to Central Zone Water Polo. The day started bright and early with our first game against ANI at 9:00 am. Although Pasadena played amazingly, unfortunately ANI took the win. We played our second game against Royal Oak and managed to beat them with a score of 8-1. Our third game, which was the final in our first pool, was against Kōwhai, which ended with a score of 9-0 in our favour. Our fourth game was against a tough team, St. Cuthbert’s. By this time we had played 3 games and this game was back to back with our game against Kōwhai, but they still did an amazing job! Our next game was against Balmoral, which ended in another win. The team then moved into the semi-finals to play for 5-8th place. First we played St. Peter’s. The game was a tough one, but we came out on top. Our final game was against Remuera Intermediate. The team smashed it and we came out in 5th place.

It was a great day and all of the students had heaps of fun! A big thank you to the parents who came to watch Pasadena play, Nikki for managing, parent drivers, and our coaches!
