Principals News

We are not far away from the end of the year, which makes for a very interesting time at Intermediate Schools, where 50% leave to go to High School, and 50% arrive from Primary School.

The transition into and out of Pasadena is an essential part of our current programme, with teachers meeting with High Schools and the Senior Management speaking to Primary school teachers about students arriving next year.  We do our utmost to try and make this process as smooth as possible, as we want to set all of our students up to succeed.

While camp had to be rearranged due to adverse weather and Health and Safety factors, it was great to interact with some of our fantastic parents who had put their hands up to help. It was amazing how everybody worked together to ensure that our students were safe and packed up, ready to leave in a minimum amount of time.

We look forward to the students participating in the alternative programme next week.

Transition

Over the last few weeks, we have been supporting our Year 8’s transition to high school by meeting with our colleagues to discuss our students’ strengths, needs and interests.  Our teachers thoroughly enjoyed meeting with Western Spring College to talk about our amazing young people.  Teachers have also completed Student Profile Forms to share further information with our local high schools.  For students with additional needs, our SENCO Mary Pretorius has also had additional meetings with the Heads of Learning Support to ensure a positive experience for our students as they transition to high school.

It is essential that all Year 8’s are now enrolled at College.  Please contact your local school if you have not already done so.  If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s transition to high school you can get in contact with your child’s teacher or Mary Pretorius mary@pasadena.school.nz

Orientation Day

For our incoming students who will be starting at Pasadena next year, we have an Orientation Day on Wednesday 30th November where they can learn more about the school, meet their new teacher and classmates.

An email was sent to all new enrolments on Friday last week. If you did not receive this and are starting at Pasadena next year, please check your Spam Folder, then contact office@pasadena.school.nz if required.

Kapahaka

Our Kapa Whakataetae has worked very hard these last few weeks to prepare for the Auckland Primary School Kapahaka Competition 2022. They’ve been practising tirelessly after school, and during the weekends to complete their bracket and get ready to stand. We are so proud of our Kapa, as it is their first time standing and competing together at this Regional level. If you are free this weekend, please come down to support our Kapa and all their efforts leading up to this stand. They will be performing at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori ā-rohe o Māngere this Saturday at 9:30 am. The tickets cost $5 for adults, $2 for kids between the age of 5 - 17, and free for kids under 5. It has been an awesome campaign and experience, and we look forward to doing this again in the near future.

AIMS Games Gratitude

We at Pasadena would like to say a massive thank you to the following local businesses for all your contributions to help us get our netball team down to the AIMS Games. Without you we would not have been able to go along for such an awesome experience.
Nga mihi.

Bike safety programme

We organised for Auckland transport to come into the school to provide cyclist skills training. They covered areas of bike safety consisting of:

Being aware of other traffic and hazards, scanning, looking behind, positioning, how much room to leave between bike and vehicle(s). The course was held over 2 days, Monday 17th October and Tuesday 18th October at school and all the students who attended have improved their bike skills and knowledge of road use. We will be providing this programme again next year.

 Action Day

A massive thank you to everyone who attended our Action Day on Thursday 27th October. The students loved being able to showcase their pitch in order to convince their audience that their product/innovation was needed the most.

Our Action Day was an excellent opportunity to get the community involved with the amazing things that happen at Pasa. It was an authentic process for assessing student understanding, demonstrated how students can take action as a result of their learning and united students, teachers, parents, whānau and other members of the school community in a collaborative experience.

Overall, Action Day was a huge success. There was an outstanding turnout from the community, with over 400 visitors. Feedback from students, whānau and the wider community has been extremely positive - we look forward to inviting you to the school for more events in the future.

Camp

While camp was not what we had imagined, we were so impressed with our students’ tenacity and positivity in challenging circumstances.  We are very excited that an alternate programme is still able to go ahead next week, with a day of water-based activities, kayaking, orienteering, and raft building,  at Lake Pupuke and land-based activities, archery, camp cooking, disc-golf and adventure-based learning, taking place at school and at Western Springs Park.  We really appreciate the community’s support with these changes.

On Monday morning the 7th of November half of the school set off, excited for Camp. After weeks of hard preparation we boarded the bus with all of our gear and eagerness. The bus ride was about an hour and a half and we spent that time wondering about the journey before us. When we arrived at camp we were all amazed by the beauty of the camp site where we would spend the next three days. Putting up our tents in the wind was little bit difficult, but we cooperated together and got it done quickly. Luckily the week before, we had practiced putting up our tents on the field so we were well prepared.

For the next two hours we played sports, hung out and did a scavenger hunt which was very fun. We next had afternoon tea which consisted of healthy fruit, home baked goods and juice. My personal favorite thing at camp was the food as it was so well prepared and delicious. For dinner we got together in our cooking groups and made some appetizing burgers, which we all worked really hard on.

That night we had some warm milo just before bed. Lights were turned off at nine so we could all be well rested for the next day. Unfortunately, it rained really hard overnight and continued on for all of the next day. Everyone stayed dry overnight, but in the morning we did get a little wet, but we all stayed as positive as possible. The teachers and parent helpers made sure we were all alright and were somewhat dry and they made the decision for us to sadly depart from camp due to the torrential rain.

Even though we had to leave early, we all had a most memorable experience. Luckily we have make-up activities next week which we are all very excited for.

Pasadena Laser Cutter

In Technology we have a new laser cutter that we have begun experimenting with to cut and engrave different materials such as wood, plastic and paper.
We have used it to create the tokens for Action Day we had as well as lots prototypes and stencils. We cant wait to see what other designs we will make!

Hato Hone St John’s Clued Up Camper

At the beginning of Term 4, Pasadena Intermediate students were lucky enough to have an educator from St John’s come into school. Our educator spent 90 minutes with students teaching them how to keep safe at camp.

Some of the things students learned were how to respond to an emergency by assessing patients using DRSABC (see if your child can remember what this means!) and taking appropriate action. Students were given scenarios and needed to explain the appropriate response. We spent some time looking at injury prevention by exploring different risks at camp and discussing how we can minimise these. Students got to practise the treatment of injuries such as soft tissue injuries, fractures, head injuries, hypothermia and hyperthermia. Finally, students discussed how to recognise environmental changes and how they can respond to these when outdoors.

This was an awesome opportunity for students to take some time and think about how to keep themselves and others safe at camp.

Sports News

Badminton
A couple of weeks ago, a group of five Pasadena students set off to the annual Central Zone Badminton tournament. Each of the students played extremely well, and battled hard against some very tough competition. The players all competed individually as well as in doubles, and it was awesome to see them work together.
A special mention to Austin Rm13 who placed 2nd in the Year 8 boys singles competition.
Group members are: Violet Rm3, Olivia Rm5, Lani Rm5, Thomas Rm1, Austin Rm13

Mixed Touch
On Thursday the 10th of November, Pasadena mixed touch team participated in the Central Zone Touch Tournament held at Cox’s Bay, Westmere. We had three wins, one loss and one draw, with Pasadena placing fourth overall. This was a great effort from our team who played very well and demonstrated a lot of heart. A huge thank you to our parent helpers and teachers who supported the team with transport to and from the event!
