Principals News

It is has been great to have the last few months of school without any disruptions. I know the students have enjoyed participating in all of the extra-curricular activities such as Central Zone Sport and our Enrichment programmes. These programmes are fundamental to Pasadena being able to provide a holistic education for all of our students.

Next week we start our holiday break. Please make sure whanau and students take time out to connect and rest for a hectic Term 2.

Please have a look at the upcoming events and discuss these with your child highlighting what they would like to be involved in.

Pasadena BOT

At our last March meeting, the BOT farewelled Mandy Tubman, who has been involved for the past 8 years. Mandy has been fundamental in the changes that taken place and has put a tremendous amount of time and effort into providing the necessary resources to ensure our students are successful.

On behalf of the school community, we thank Mandy for her fantastic contribution. You will be missed.

Pasifika Fono

On Wednesday 17th March, we held our Pasifika fono for parents and families in the Pasadena Centre. It was great to have around 40 people come along to voice their ideas and hear about the opportunities that are available to our Pasifika students.

The purpose of the evening was to consult with our Pasifika community about ways to support our Pasifika students, what wellbeing looks like for them, and to develop ideas to further enhance opportunities for our Pasifika students in 2021.  The fono was also to inform the community of school initiatives that are planned for the year, and to build stronger relationships between Pasifika families and the school.
We look forward to sharing more of our Pasifika success with you as the year progresses.

School Lunches

Our lunch online has been an enormous success with our students. To be able to support local business and provide healthy options for student lunches has been excellent.

Unfortunately, Tank Salads has struggled to provide the necessary resource to service our students, so this will no longer be available in Term 2. We are currently looking for an alternative.

To find information about our lunch programme, please go to our website https://pasadena.school.nz/our-school/about-us/school-tuckshop/ .

Student Led Conferences

Our students are really looking forward to sharing their learning with you at Student Led Conferences. These are happening today, Wednesday 14th April from 1 - 8pm, and Thursday 15th April from 1 - 6pm (a reminder that school finishes at 1pm on both these days)

You are also invited to visit our Specialist Classes during this time.  Pop in for a visit to see what students have been learning and creating in visual arts, music, foods and nutrition and technology.

If you haven't booked in for a Student-Led Conference yet, you can do so by going to School Interviews.  If you require a code to book it is cc9sq.

Virtual Games Design Enrichment

On Monday afternoon 28 students from the Virtual Games Design Enrichment group went to the VR VOOM arcade in Newmarket. We learnt all about programming languages and the gaming industry from Thomas, then had the opportunity to experience loads of different VR games including multiplayer, job simulators, motorbike racing and more. A big thanks to the parents who came along and made the day possible!

Pasadena Fiesta

On Friday 7th May 2021, Pasadena Intermediate will be holding a Fundraising Fiesta Event which involves the students taking part in ‘The Great Pasadena Quiz’. This is a sponsored quiz that the students will answer within a fun, interactive and inclusive environment.  Students will be given a copy of the questions, which they can research and then learn the answers.  There will be prizes for all students who fundraise, and they will be able to select a prize depending on how much money they raise.  Donations can be made for individual students through the Pasadena Give a Little page.  The Fiesta event will include music, drinks, snacks and a sausage sizzle, students can wear their own clothes, and will take part in the Great Pasadena Quiz.  An information booklet will be sent home tomorrow, which includes more details about the event, how to access the Give a Little page, the Great Pasadena Quiz questions, and the prizes available.

Kua tokomaha hoki e whai wāhi mai ana.

On the 24th of March, the Māori whānau of Pasadena Intermediate met to discuss kaupapa Māori within the school. Even with two lockdowns, our new year-7 students have quickly formed positive relationships with each other. During those lockdowns, their attendance and engagement with our online programme was high. Our year-8 cohort has settled into their role as tuākana and helped with the transition of our new ākonga into life as a Pasa student.

Kapa haka is going well with a large number of students participating. We are currently looking at opportunities for our students to perform with some possible avenues being a Matariki performance, the Eden/Albert Festival, and an in-school showcase. We will also be investigating other opportunities for engaging our local community and marae.

Whaea Mere, who is currently running our raranga and pā harakeke extension programme, has a number of ideas regarding further extension groups next term. Also, Whaea Hinekura will be facilitating an intensive, term-long course on whatu kahu with more information coming out soon.

2021 is definitely looking to be an amazing year for our whānau at Pasadena Intermediate with so many kaupapa to look forward to.

Bigfoot Bike Safety

We organised for Auckland transport to come into the school to provide cyclist skills training this week. Bigfoot adventure covered areas of bike safety consisting of: Being aware of other traffic and hazards, scanning, looking behind, positioning, how much room to leave between bike and vehicle(s). 28 students not only learned these vital skills needed for the roads, they had lots of fun at the same time.

Due to demand we will be organising another course in Term 4 for those students on the waiting list.

School Social

Last week on Thursday it was the school Social! It was a fun time to socialise with others and have a good time. It was organised by the Student Council, who decided that the theme of the social was going to be Autumn. Lots of people tried their best to enjoy the theme wearing autumn clothes and colours, and we managed to find six winners for best dressed.  The Student Council promoted the social in classes, sold tickets, decorated the hall and organised the snacks for sale.  On the day before the social, there was a song suggestion box put out in the office, this was for people who wanted to suggest an appropriate song that would play at the social. There were lots of great song suggestions and in the end Mr. Brown put together an awesome playlist for everybody to dance to.

Thanks to everyone who came to the social and bought a ticket. We managed to sell about 240 tickets! It was a fun time and we hope to see you all at the next school event.

EOTC

Students had a fantastic time at EOTC at Birkenhead Leisure Centre, challenging themselves physically, socially and mentally as they experienced a range of activities such as high ropes, rock climbing, disc golf, orienteering, chariot landraft building, and a bush walk.  Everyone showed great resilience through the Auckland weather, developed their collaborative and leadership skills across the range of activities, and showed how inclusive and supportive they are of each other.  Thanks to all of our amazing volunteers who came along to support us - we couldn’t of done it without you!!

EOTC Reflection

Orienteering: my eyes scanned the horizon searching the wide green field.  Hena looked down at the map, mumbling quietly to herself.

“It should be over there?” she said, vaguely waving her hand at the car park.

We walked over, the gravel crunching under our feet, the cars towering over us like abandoned ships. We dug around in the bush, crossed the car park multiple times then finally found the different landmarks. They were little wooden poles with letters on them.

The High Ropes were a sight to behold.  High towering wires, platforms, ropes, tires and even a climbing walk floatin gin the sky.  Today, we will be tackling these obstacles.  I went with the group climbing the high beam.  First, we put on our harness, then chose which obstacle we wanted to do based on confidence.  Then we were assigned a job in our group, the helmet wearing climber, the helping belayer (the main belayer was an adult), or the basket person who made sure the rope didn’t touch the ground. Going up was pretty easy and it felt very safe.  First, you climbed a ladder, then some stepping ‘pegs’ . Once you reached the beam it got pretty windy, and most people came down.  Going down using the belay was really nice and the views were beautiful, but you got a wedgie!

Pasadena Ski and Snowboard team

We are again having a school Ski and Snowboard Team in 2021.
Information went out to students last week.

The Ski Championship will take place from 13 September to 16 September at Mt Ruapehu. Leading up to the event, we will be training at Snowplanet. For further information about the event, please go to www.nips.org.nz

Girls League Tag

This year, there were so many girls teams entered into the competition that we needed to have two divisions with six teams in each. This meant playing five very challenging and competitive games. Once again, It was a long day and everyone was sore and tired by the end of it. We played and beat Auckland Normal Intermediate, Marist, Mt Roskill and Wesley Intermediate. Sadly, we lost the game that mattered most against a very slick Kowhai Intermediate team. Overall we placed 2nd in our Division but due to time constraints, the Girls didn’t have any finals. Despite this, we had a wonderful day and were grateful for the experience.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents who helped with transport and look forward to playing again in 2022.

Boys League Tag

The Y7’s boys team played excellently considering the amount of training they had. They won three games and lost two. They placed fourth in the competition and can be very proud of what they achieved. Player of the tournament for the Y7’s was the team captain, Cooper McDade from R13. Congratulations, boys, well done.

The Y8 boys played three, and won three games meeting Wesley Intermediate in the semi-finals. They won convincingly heading into the finals against a very good Royal Oak Intermediate school. The boys dug deep, defended well and came away with a win, meaning that Pasadena Intermediate are the current Auckland Central Zone League Tag champions for 2021. Congratulations, boys! Awesome effort. Player of the tournament was Parekaahu Keepa from R9.

On Thursday the 8th of April, the Y8 boys were back at Cox’s Bay to compete at the Auckland Championships. They played extremely well beating Bader Intermediate, Marina View school and Sylvia Park Intermediate. They then played the semi-finals losing to a very good Whangaparoa Intermediate school. The Y8’s placed fourth and are currently the fourth top school for League Tag in Auckland for 2021. Excellent effort!

We would like to thank all our parents and families who supported us by assisting with transport to and from the competition. Also a huge thank you to Mr. Tasi and Whaea Rangimarie, our awesome coaches. You guys rock!
