Principals News

It has been great that our school sports season has been able to take place this term with in School Sports, Central Zone and out-of-school sports taking place. While it is always nice to see our teams compete to a high level, it has also been great to hear students' stories about stepping out of their comfort zones to give new sports a go for the first time. One of the reasons we offer so many sports across all of the codes is to ensure that students get access to a range of activities and experiences.

Please make sure you look through the upcoming sports dates and chat with your child about possible sports they could be involved in.

Property update

The buildings continue to be slowly completed, with the lack of steel in New Zealand being a significant factor for the delay. We still hope to have the buildings constructed for the start of 2023 school year.

The good news is that the new hard courts can now be used by students, with 2 Basketball courts in use this week and a hard court area outside Rooms 1-6.

The students have done a fantastic job being patient and using the limited space that has been available.

Casual vacancy for a parent representative

I am pleased to announce that Stacey Morrison, our current BOT chairperson, was re-elected to our school Board in the recent election.

Due to not being able to fill all of the available places in the election, a  casual vacancy has occurred for an elected parent representative.

The board has decided to fill the vacancy by selection.

If 10% or more of eligible voters on the school roll ask the board, within 28 days of this notice being published, to hold a by-election to fill the vacancy, then a by-election will be held.

Request for a by-election should be sent to:

Stacey Morrison

Girls Self Defense

In Week 5, the Year 8 girls went to the hall, Learning Centre and Pasa Centre for one whole day. We learned about how to defend ourselves in tough situations including being assaulted, followed or attacked. We practised kicking and punching on pads with buddies and we practised yelling when we needed help or were in danger. This included telling people to go away, leaving us alone or anything that would scare people off. It was a fun day and it made us more confident and taught us how to defend ourselves in tough situations.

Writers Festival

On Wednesday 24th of August, the Writing Extension group attended the Writers Festival. They were treated to 4 amazing published authors who spoke about their passion for writing and the inspiration behind the books they wrote. Kwame Alexander, an American writer of poetry and children's books, spoke about his book The Crossover where 18 publishers declined to publish his work however through resilience and perseverance finally got a breakthrough and won the 2015 Newbery Medal. Sonya Willson, an award-winning novelist, talked about her book Spark Hunter and how she drew inspiration from her childhood summer spent exploring the forests of Fiordland National Park. Graci Kim, an award-winning and New York Times bestselling author who wrote the book The Last Fallen Star, spoke about how Korean diaspora representation was missing in books and she was inspired by her grandmother's ghost stories as a child to implement this within the books she wrote. Lastly, Gareth Ward a magician and storyteller Brasswitch and Bot. His book was centred around prejudice and how things aren’t always as they seem. It was a spectacular day.

Green Jam

Our student leaders went to a conference at the Auckland Zoo where they heard inspirational speakers talk about sustainability and how youth can inspire change. They came away fired up with lots of ideas for social action to share with their fellow students. Our unit of Inquiry next term is around Earth matters so they will be able to take a leading role.

Polynesian Panther visit

Our Pacifica leaders group invited Vincent TuiSamoa one of the original Polynesian Pathers to speak to them about his experience of being a Pacific Islander in Ponsonby in the 1970s. He encouraged them to celebrate their culture, fight racism and strive to follow their dreams and lead their community. This group will be printing T-shirts to sell at the art exhibition to raise funds for a Pacifica initiative.

Lit Quiz

On Wednesday, August 31st, Pasadena sent two highly competitive and extremely hard-working teams to compete in the annual Literature Quiz tournament at St Cuthbert's College. This is an international competition which is widely regarded as the sport of reading. Basically, all teams are given 100 questions in a range of different categories (e.g. cities, graphic novels) and the team to answer the most, is crowned Auckland Champions.

Team A competed in the morning session and team B in the afternoon. Both teams did exceptionally well and both deservedly won monetary prizes.

Out of 50 other teams/schools, Team A earned the Bronze medal (3rd place!)

Team B competed against 40 other schools and finished an amazing 5th place! Well done to all participants and look forward to next year!

Team A: Tilly 6, Zara 6, Fred 2, Ruby 12

Team B: Leilani 11, Aniva 15, Vicki 15, Austin 13

Valued reserves: Amy 15, Charlotte 7, Holly 15

Epro8

The EPro8 Challenge is a science and engineering competition. Every year over 22,000 students from throughout New Zealand take part.

The EPro8 challenge started with a weeklong internal programme that each classroom teacher ran with his or her own class. They selected their best team of 4 to compete in the internal Pasa competition. After that we entered four teams into the first round of the inter-school heats. The teams from Rooms 3 and 6 have made it through to the Auckland semi-finals that we will be hosting this week.

Sports News

Interzone Boys Netball
Last Tuesday, August 30 Pasadena Intermediate sent their Year 8 netball team to Auckland Interzones Tournament. The day started off with a nail biting performance against Rosehill Intermediate. We were neck and neck the entire game and fell short in the last half. Our next game saw us facing Mission Heights Junior College and defeating them to move into the quarter finals coming in second in our pool. This was just the motivation the boys needed. They faced an overall well drilled and coached team losing to Point England School which meant they moved into the semi finals to play Sylvia Park Intermediate. They played hard, some tired and exhausted from a full day of Netball which saw our subs come on a build the momentum of the game. This was just the fire the team needed to beat Sylvia's team. We moved to play for 5th and 6th which was a nail biting game the entire time. Coaches were screaming , mums were frustrated, the final whistle blew and we lost and finished in 6th place out of 16 teams.

We would like to thank the parents and caregivers who came out to support and special mention to Coopers mum Sarah who helped coach on the day.

An amazing performance of the day to the boys (Vinnie Rm 1, Micah Rm 1, Cole Rm 3, Jake Rm 3 , Braxton Rm 4, Trevahn Rumaki 9 , Waioro Rumaki 10, Hariem Rm 12, Cooper and Austin Rm 13) Lastly a big thank you to Lulu Rm 7 who was a exceptional umpire the entire tournament.
