 Newsletter Term 1 Edition 2

Principals' News

Already this term, we have had several disruptions with 2 lockdowns due to COVID-19. We are now in week 6 of the term and only on our second Monday!!

As a school, we decided to provide a learning programme in lockdown as close to our regular learning programme as possible. It has been very reassuring to have had such fantastic feedback from our community about our remote programmes, making the process a lot easier for teachers.

Remember our Level 2 protocols that are put in place to keep all of our students and staff safe. These include:

  • Students need to stay home if they are sick or show any cold or flu symptoms. Anybody showing signs of these at school will be sent home
  • Staff and pupils should be far enough away from each other so that they are not breathing on or touching each other
  • Children will need to wash their hands and use sanitiser (available in classrooms) before and after break times
  • Regular cleaning and disinfection of high touch surfaces
  • Students will need to bring a named drink bottle to school as the drink fountains will only be available for students to fill empty bottles
  • We strongly recommend that students bring their own devices to use
  • Face coverings are not required in schools; however, students who wish to wear these may do so
  • The lunch online ordering system will be available from Monday 8th March
  • Parents are encouraged to stay off-site. If you need to contact the office, please use 09 8462169, mobile 0274688003 or email office@pasadena.school.nz. If it is essential to come into the school office, please maintain a 2m distance, use the contact tracing app or sign in using the register. Parents will not be able to enter classrooms.
  • When dropping off and picking up your child/children, please stay in the car and park away from the school's front gates.

Introduction of Kindo payments

Pasadena Intermediate is excited to announce after parent feedback that we have joined with Kindo to provide school payments online using the Kindo App.
It is our preferred method of payment, and we encourage you to set-up your myKindo account today. Receipts will only be able to be viewed and issued on this platform. If you are an existing user from your primary school, you will be able to use the same account. There is no charge to set up your account. Please go to our school website https://pasadena.school.nz/kindo/ to view instructions on how to set up an account. There is also a Kindo help desk which is open from 8 am to 4 pm on weekdays.

Student Assessment

Over the next few weeks (and continuing throughout the school year) students will be completing a number of different assessments. One assessment in particular is e-asTTle tests. E-asTTle is an online assessment tool, developed to assess students’ achievement and progress in Reading, Writing and Mathematics or in Pānui, Pāngarau and Tuhituhi. E-asTTle provides teachers with information that can be used to inform learning programmes and to apply teaching practice that maximises individual student learning. It is a great tool for helping students to understand their progress and for involving parents in discussions about how their child is doing/collaboratively forming next learning steps (results/pathways will be shared at Student-Led Conferences later on this term). Alongside e-asTTle testing, a number of formative assessments also occur to provide crucial information about what students understand and what they need support with. This includes observations, discussions, questioning, self-assessments and activities completed. A focus for Pasadena this year is sharing student’s current achievement, next steps and learning progress with caregivers and whānau in a timely manner using a digital platform called Hero - more information about this will be provided over the term, there will be an Assessment parent information evening on Thursday 25 March at 6.30pm.

Refurbishment of our school hall

Our school hall has successfully been upgraded with new wall linings, acoustic panels and a new sports floor. I  know the students are enjoying having a great new facility. A big thank you to our Community at Pasadena (C@P) group who purchased new blinds for the area. It's great to have a fantastic facility.

Pasifika Parking Fundraiser

Unfortunately the Pasifika Festival has been postponed until 10-11 April and moved to Mt Smart Stadium. This will mean that we will not be doing our carparking fundraiser. A big thank you to Vanessa Black who has for the last 3 years organised the schedule which is a huge job.
As this is our major school fundraiser we are currently investigating another way of raising funds.

Remote Learning Programme

It was great to see all of our students participate in our remote learning programme over lockdown the past week. Students attended daily 9am Wellbeing meetings, as well as a range of differentiated activities/video calls for Reading, Writing, Maths and Specialist areas (with other tasks provided for Where We Are in Place and Time, PE etc).

Our students did an amazing job with being actively engaged in their learning, and we thank all the parents/caregivers who supported their child during this time. We received some amazing feedback from our school community which we really appreciate it. As we continue to move down alert levels, our full school programme occurs. If you have any questions or feedback regarding our remote learning programme at Pasadena, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC)

This year’s EOTC experience will operate as two day trips from school on:

  • Monday 29th March & Tuesday 30th March (Rooms 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12)
  • Wednesday 31st March & Thursday 1st April (Rooms 1, 2, 5, 6, 13, 14, 15)

Over the week students will participate in a range of activities such as rock climbing, high ropes and orienteering.  These activities will take place and be facilitated by Birkenhead Leisure Centre.

For EOTC to run successfully we are reliant on parent helpers to support us - please indicate on the form or email your child’s teacher if you are available to help.

Information was sent home on Monday this week, including information about payment and consent.  All permission forms and payment of $110 needs to be received by Monday 22nd March. Payment can be made through the Kindo app.  If you require further support with this or would like to set up a payment plan please contact Thelma at office@pasadena.school.nz.

Further information will also be available at our EOTC Parent Information Evening on Tuesday 16 March at 6.15pm

Bucket Hats

Bucket Hats are back in stock.
These can be purchased from the office for $18.00.
Please remember to name all items of your child's uniform as it makes it easier to get back to them if anything is misplaced or lost.

Immunisations

Over the next few days students will receive an immunisation consent form for Boostrix Year 7 and Gardasil 9 (HPV) Year 8, and will watch an information video from Starship Community Health with their class.  Usually these consent talks are delivered by Starship Community Nurses, however they have been deployed to help with the Covid-19 Vaccination Programme.  If you would like to watch the video as a family you can find the link here:

Year 7 & 8 Information English

Year 7 & 8 Information te reo Māori

All forms need to be returned to the office as soon as possible, regardless of whether students are receiving the vaccination at school or not.  Vaccinations will take place later this year, we will confirm the dates with you once we hear from Starship.

Thank you for your support with this.

Student Council

The focus of our Student Council is to create and lead initiatives across the school within our strategic areas: Students, Future Focus, Wellbeing, Community and Bilingual Pathways.

The Student Council organises and leads events, presents in front of groups, supports PB4L and develops ideas for social action.

At this stage, applications are open to Year 8’s only, with Year 7’s being able to apply at the start of Term 3.

After a presentation about the role and application process at Assembly on the 26th February, the application form was discussed and shared with students via Google Classroom last week and again through the daily student notices this week.

Applications close at 5pm tonight, Wednesday 10th March, with successful applicants announced at assembly on Friday 19 March.

Counsellor

Kia Ora, my name is Rebecca Braggins & I am the new School Counsellor at Pasadena Intermediate.

If your child would like to talk to me about something that has happened or is happening in their life, perhaps at home or at school: such as feeling worried about schoolwork or assessment, having friendship challenges or feeling concerned about family at home, anything at all, students, a family member or caregiver at home, can contact me on wellbeing@pasadena.school.nz to make an appointment.

My role as a School Counsellor is to provide support, listen and work with students whenever possible to help them feel happier or more settled in school or at home and to provide a safe and private non-judgemental space for them to talk to me and to feel listened to and respected. I can also provide some ideas or strategies that may help, that we can work on and explore together.

What we talk about remains confidential unless I have concerns for student’s safety.

I am available Thursdays during school hours and my office space is the Learning Centre, upstairs next to the staff room.

Many thanks, Rebecca

Duathlon

Our annual Pasadena Duathlon will be taking place on Friday the 19th of Match at 11:55am. The students run around the block and through Seddon Fields, plus they get to cool off with a swim at the end. We encourage every student to give the Duathlon a go, even if they want to walk the course with their friends.

We will need some parent helpers on the day! Please get in touch with me at james@pasadena.school.nz if you would like to volunteer and hour of your time or if you have any questions about the day.

Eco-Warriors

We are very excited to be working with Sustainable Coastlines and doing a Pasadena cleanup at Te Tokarao (Meola Reef). This event will take place on

April the 9th. It starts at school at 9.00 am and ends at 1.30. It involves a presentation followed by a walk to the reef and a cleanup. We need community support so if you are able to help please email the sustainability team. We have a number of student-led initiatives underway so watch out for updates.

heather@pasadena.school.nz or sue@pasadena.school.nz

Please come along, we'd love to see you there!
