It’s not anyone’s idea of good news: the predicted recession is here. We don’t have a choice on that, but we do have a choice about how we react to it.

 

We started our business in the middle of the GFC 11-odd years ago, and perhaps counterintuitively, we ended up thriving. As other businesses struggled to stay afloat, we found ourselves in a less competitive environment.

 

Here are some of the lessons we’ve learned:

 

• Don’t stick to your knitting if no one wants woollens anymore. Now is the time to pivot!
• Cut spend that’s not bringing in wins – what do you really need to bring in business? Keep that, and can the rest.
• Invest in business-winning activities – it can be tempting to pinch every penny, but now is the time to double-down on things like training, marketing and expert advice.
• Be kind to yourself – recessions are hard work. Find time to be kind to your team and yourself to keep motivation and focus high.
